Screen Printing 2

As my prints progressed I decided to give screen print a second try. I decided to use the strawberry once again as I had drawn it loads in my sketchbook and I love the shape. I decided to use a bacground of strawberries in light grey to add texture to my print as I felt the first ones were flat. I then added a main strawberry on top in the centre in different colours )making sure not to use red of course). Here are a few combinatins of my finished screen prints :)

Semester 2

This semester we as a class were given the task of writing our own brief. After much thought I decided to base my project on Colour and its effects. I began first by looking at feelings and emotions associated with colour but after tutorials with Sercan and Noelle I decided to instead look at colour theories. The one which stood out to me was The Stroop Test of Stroop Effect. This theory is based on the fact that we recognise colour before language.
Here is a website which fully explains the theory itself : http://www.snre.umich.edu/eplab/demos/st0/stroopdesc.html

First Screen Prints
My first screen prints were based on the ideas of this theory. The prints are text based whereby I mixed and matched the colours so that it becomes confusing to the viewer.

I liked the concept behind my idea but I found that the prints didnt turn out quite as I would have liked. It was my first real experience with screen printing and I definately wanted to improve on my technique. I also felt that while the Stroop effect uses text I still found myself wanting to use imagery in my prints to get the point across. I found that the easiest way to use imagery while still maintaining my message was through the use of fruit or veg. These objects already have a distinctive colour in peoples minds and therefore the effect would still work.

I decided to first try my imagery using woodblock printing. I used images from my sketchbooks in the prints such as : A banana that was green or Lemon cheesecake in blue.

First Woodblock Prints

I liked how these prints turned out, I printed them using different colours of paper in order to understand my concept. They wer, however, overly simpified and I decided to go ahead with another woodblock..this time a reduction woodblock print.

Reduction woodblock Print
This is my reduction woodblock print, I decided to work back into them using watercolour afterwards to emphasise the different colours. All of this work is referenced through continuous work in my sketchbook.
